One of the most exciting parts of your wedding planning journey is find THE dress! While this day is incredibly exciting, there are a few things to think about ahead of your appointment. Following some of these tips before you shop will help you avoid feeling burnt out and stressed out, so before you go and try on every dress possible, here’s a list to help prepare you for wedding dress shopping and make it the best experience ever.
First and foremost, find the right bridal store.
We think the key to having the best bridal shopping experience is to get started at the right bridal store from the beginning. It’s all about quality over quantity and experience over pressure. Putting a little research in before you begin shopping will avoid you traveling all over town, feeling exhausted and burnt out after 4 appointments. Just like you would search for almost anything else wedding related, a trusted google search will go a long way. Once you have narrowed down your stores, we suggest you head on over to their Pinterest and Instagram page to get familiar with their look, feel and overall aesthetic. Don’t be afraid to call or email the store to ask a few questions about styles, sizes, prices and any other questions you can think of. Every bridal store offers something a little different, why not save yourself the headache and find the right one from the start! Remember, it’s ok to find your dress at the first store you visit and cancel your other appointments.
At Ellynne Bridal, we treat our brides to a private bridal suite complete with refreshments, a comfortable robe to use while you shop and comfortable seating for 4 of your closest decision makers. Our bridal consultants are experts at what they do, providing you with the best bridal experience in Nebraska.
Identify Your Style
While we want our brides to come in with an open mind, we also recommend that our brides check out our Pinterest, Blogs and Instagram account to get a feel for some dresses and looks that speak to your style and vibe. Check out upcoming trunk shows as these events bring in several dresses that aren’t normally in our store, meaning you could get a one-of-a-kind dress! These photos are a great way to kick off your appointment, allowing your bridal consultant to begin to get a feel for your style and personality. Don’t be surprised if you say, “YES!” to a dress that is completely different than what you thought though! This happens often once you begin to see yourself in different wedding dresses!
What should I bring to my appointment?
The correct undergarments can make the difference between a wedding dress fitting well and a wedding dress fitting perfectly. If you already have the undergarments that you will be wearing on your wedding day, it would be best to wear them the day of the appointment, or at least bring them with you. Remember, you are trying on samples that other people will be trying on, so be sure to wear underwear and a nude strapless bra at minimum. While calling to make your appointment, you can always ask the bridal store if they have any specialty bridal bras for you to try on with the dress, but do not assume they have any in store. It is better to be over-prepared for wedding dress shopping than under-prepared.
Important Decision Makers
We know you want to share this experience with all your bridesmaids, as well as your mother, mother-in-law, aunts, grandmothers, etc., but bringing a huge entourage can lead to trouble and stress. Lots of stress! The bigger your entourage, the more opinions you will get on your wedding dress choices. Different opinions can be helpful, but too many will lead to disagreements and feeling overwhelmed. We recommend bringing 4 of your closest friends or family to help you make this decision, leaving any babies or children under the age of 16 at home. This will keep the focus 100% on you and what you want. After all, the most important opinion is yours.
Establish a Budget
One of the top mistakes brides make is not knowing the budget for their wedding dress before they head in to your appointment. Wedding dresses can vary in price by quite a bit, and having at least a range that you are comfortable spending will help both you and your consultant during your bridal appointment. We can’t stress enough the importance of discussing your budget ahead of time — with your partner, with your parents, with anyone who might be involved in the purchase of your dress. It is important to establish ahead of your appointment if your budget can be flexible or if it is absolutely firm. This way, the consultant doesn’t bring you gowns you absolutely cannot afford, and you don’t have to second guess the price of each dress you try on.
Lastly, keep in mind that the price tag on the dress does not include things like alterations, your veil or accessories, etc. It can be a smart idea to come up with a budget for your entire bridal look so that you aren’t surprised when additional costs appear over time.
